AMOY Review: Checking into Singapore’s Best Boutique Hotel

Singapore knows how to deliver when it comes to luxury hotels, and AMOY is no different. With an abundance of modern tech-focused luxury boutique hotels, AMOY Hotel is really a breath of fresh air and a desirable swatch of property known for its strong hold of history, ancient heritage and Chinese culture.

The AMOY Hotel, a property of Far East Hospitality, is a small award winning luxury boutique hotel located along Telok Ayer Street and only a short walk from Chinatown district. It was only very recently that AMOY received two very prestigious awards two years running for Top Hotel in Singapore and Best Hotel for Service in Singapore, and I was lucky enough to stay and write about my experience here.

The hotel has been built behind Singapore’s oldest Chinese Temple, Fuk Tak Chi, a temple built back in 1824 by Hakka and Cantonese immigrants. The location is quite significant given that it was once the landing site of Chinese immigrants arriving by boat to seek better fortunes here. The temple ran for many years also acting as a shrine before closing in 1994 due to its deteriorating state.

It later re-opened to the public again in 1998, and now acts not only as a small street museum that narrates the lives of those Chinese immigrants but you can also see how it has played a role in shaping Singapore’s history today. Amazingly after all those years, the temple still remains an amazing piece of architecture that has been restored so very well and used as the elegant entrance to the AMOY hotel!

After arriving here via our luxurious airport transfer (which I might add is inclusive when booking a room here), staff were eagerly waiting out front to swiftly collect our bags and show us through their beautiful hotel’s entrance. I was so delighted to have one of the staff so enthusiastically and passionately explain in detail the history and heritage behind Singapore’s oldest temple; Fuk Tak Chi. After the short but sweet introduction, staff presented us with a welcome drink to get settled in before showing us our room for the next two nights.

From the moment I stepped inside, AMOY lived up to its name as a luxury boutique hotel in every sense. The lobby holds an air of modern day elegance and splendor while still keeping the true heritage of the property evident. I especially loved the unique décor and high ceiling lights and the notable Chinese letters across the walls. The service also really sets a high standard for other luxury accommodations in Singapore.

AMOY is located in such a great central location, being smack bang in the CBD of Singapore. Singapore isn’t an entirely huge city which is one of the things I really loved about visiting, but it being so small also meant from AMOY you can walk to soo much or conveniently there is always a MRT (train station) somewhere nearby – in which case there is the MRT right across the street from the hotel! From AMOY you can easily walk to Chinatown, Collyer Quay, Raffles Place and the Marina. Right outside the lobby of AMOY is also an arcade with a diverse range of food selections that are both affordable and authentic! Try Teh Tarik Express (great for coffee and teas!) and out onto the Far East Square are many more pubs and restaurants that are definitely worth trying!

And if you hop on the MRT, in only a few stop you can be exploring Little India, Gardens by the Bay, the Harbour front centre and the Botanic Gardens.

AMOY Hotel hosts a total of 37 rooms with two different selections of room types; deluxe double & the cosy single room. Each room have a flat screen TV, fridge/mini bar, hair dryer, shower amenities, slippers, coat hangers, telephone, mini torch and they even supply an umbrella in case you get caught in Singapore’s spurts of rain showers!

Walking into our room, it was clear the mixture of modern design with Chinese artistic flavours intertwined. The interiors not only in the hotel itself but the rooms are designed to mirror the life, love and tribulations of Singapore’s early Chinese immigrants and the Heritage décor and traditional Chinese furniture, namely the beautiful porcelain basin in the bathroom and stools are a perfect example. No two rooms at AMOY are of the same layout or furnishings either!

One thing I especially loved about AMOY was their absolute wealth of complimentary in room and hotel services. I believe this is especially rare for many hotels which lead me to again conclude that AMOY genuinely knows how to please their guests!

– Complimentary fast running Wi-Fi access that ran on multiple devices and the Wi-Fi ran all over the hotel property!

– Complimentary mini bar items in the fridge and snack bar in each room. This included items such as soft drinks, water, snack nuts and chips. There was also a jug to make tea and coffee and if you’re like me and appreciate tea, you will love the gourmet tea selection! Everything you use is also restocked on a daily basis as per housekeeping.

– Complimentary one way airport transfer. When you book any room here, ask about their airport transfers. This is seriously so great and there aren’t any hotels I can count on one hand that would offer such a service!

– Complimentary Buffet Breakfast is from 7:00am to 10:00am daily. They have a selection of Singapore’s favourites (spring Rolls, siew Mai, pork dumpling, mini sausages) to fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, white and wholemeal bread and eggs made to order by the chef at AMOY.

Other services can include:

– 24 hour front desk
– Air conditioning
– Daily housekeeping
– Laundry service
– Concierge services

The Verdict

This was my first trip to Singapore and I am so grateful and appreciative to have had the pleasure of staying at Amoy Hotel. I must say that I have never stayed in a hotel so rich in heritage and steeped in local culture but I loved it! The excellent service and great location was a major plus while staying here and I wouldn’t hesitate to come back. At night, we were also given a good night note from the staff of AMOY Hotel…talk about personalised service to make you feel so special!

For a hotel in such a central spot, you felt you could escape into the hotel at the end of the day and feel a million miles away from any hustle and bustle of Singapore!

Thanks for having us AMOY Hotel!
