Dubai Desert Safari: My experience

Dubai is so often bypassed by travellers, either stopping over at the airport briefly in between destinations or some going as far as spending a few short nights in the city. What so many people don’t realise is the true beauty that lays beyond the glistering skyscrapers and luxurious hotels and resorts.. is Dubai’s best kept secret – the desert. Just a short drive away inland past the busy highways and roads, lay the very mystic Arabic dunes.

During my stay here, I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the many safari exhibitions on offer and being my first ever desert safari tour and I was feeling so super excited about it! I anxiously waited for 3:30 pm when I was to picked up and driven out to the desert in our 4 Wheel Drive. A little less that an hour or so we reached our destination – the beginning of the desert. We eagerly watched the drivers of our and other fellow cars flatten the tyres to get us prepared for the dune bashing (sand driving) that was about to begin.

And off we went, slipping and sliding through the desert sands of Dubai in a 4 Wheel Drive! Quite an amazing experience! The term dune bashing is quite accurate, you do get quite knocked around from side to side and bum off the seat, head hitting the ceiling type stuff. Don’t let this deter you though, you have seatbelts and very professional drivers on board. And a handy tip, if you get a little motion sick, take some pills before heading out there!

We stopped briefly for sunset photographs before reaching our final destination, at the campsite. Here, guests had plenty of included entertainment and traditional activities available including, camel riding, henna artistry, costume dress ups, belly dancing performances and shisha’s… just to name a few! Later, an authentic BBQ dinner was supplied which was all freshly prepared at the camp.

At the end of the evening, we headed back through the dark desert before reaching Dubai again. Overall the night was great, all guests had the opportunity to experience the traditional entertainment and activities that were on offer and each one was outstanding. And of course, the serenity of the desert was a pretty clear factor once you are out there – so tranquil and absolutely stunning.

For anyone considering a trip out here, I would absolutely recommend it!

If you want to experience the untouched, natural side to Dubai, I highly recommend these Desert Safari Tours. They offer morning, evening and overnight tours and are available at affordable prices. In future, having enjoyed myself as much as I did, I would definitely consider the overnight tour and camp out in the desert overnight!
