Whether you’re a gym junkie or not, everyone can reap positive benefits from using protein powder, especially if you aren’t getting enough in your everyday diet. You may be most familiar with protein powder being used as a post gym training drink to replenish the body after a hard session at the gym, but that most definitely isn’t the only way you can use it!
There are actually so many creative ways to use protein powder, in fact, protein is so versatile you can incorporate it into yummy desserts, even snacks and breakfast foods to help increase your protein intake daily. So whether you are getting tired of your usual post gym shake or are keen to get creative, check out some these creative ways I use my protein powder…
Oats are definitely a much used stable in my cupboard all year round, but particularly in those colder winter months when I feel like something warm in the mornings. I usually mix my oats up with milk and/or water, chia seeds, blueberries/banana, cinnamon with chocolate protein powder for a smooth tasting chocolate bowl of oats. You can use any combination of flavors to make your own oats (ie. add almonds, goji berries, cacao nibs, peanut butter etc) and any flavor protein will do just fine.
Smoothies are great post workout and I love that you can pack so much into them. At the moment I love blending up my chocolate protein with a small handful of oats, chia seeds, banana, peanut butter with a splash of milk and water…tastes like a thick Nutella shake, containing healthy carbs, fats and protein!
3. Healthy snacks such as cookies, muffins, brownies and slices…
You get the drift… you can virtually add protein powder to any general baking you are doing, just substitute some of the flour for protein and you got yourself a protein packed snack. Flavored proteins work great and add additional sweetness, however unflavored is equally as great and can subtly be added to anything!
4. Hot chocolate
Who doesn’t love hot chocolate?! Add hot water or milk to a cup of chocolate protein (could even be vanilla or any flavour) and stir until evenly mixed. Alternatively, use a shaker to shake up the protein cold first before putting in the microwave for approx. 40-50 secs or until desired drinking heat.
5. Ice cream
You can make a delicious and healthy ice-cream and/or thick mousse using protein powder. This makes a perfect dessert and guilt free treat after dinner! See full recipe here.
Although café pancakes have a bad rap for being too sweet and sugary, make them at home instead using protein powder as the base ingredient for your own healthier version. There are just so many options to be creative with ingredients too.
Homemade chocolates are the best and are much, much more clean than the store bought varieties! One of my favorite recipes I use is here, and simply just add additional protein powder to them.
8. Protein balls
Protein balls are probably my most favourite snack of all time and I always keep a batch made up in my fridge. They make perfect bite size snacks and you can pack so much into them to make them nutritionally dense and tasty. I always carry a few with me in my handbag everywhere I go.
